Article: Simplifying
Search Engines
By Julie Friedman Bacchini
Search engines rely on incredibly complex algorithms to
determine what results to show each time a user types in
a query. But the basic information you need to know to
improve your site’s ranking is actually very simple:
1. It’s a world of robots and spiders.
Never assume that a person is reading your site and carefully
cataloging it in some master file somewhere. Nothing could
be further from the truth. Search engines send out robots
and spiders – automated programs – to “crawl” your
site. Simply put, the robots and spiders read everything
on your web site and report back to the search engine on
what they find. The search engine then files all that information
away.
2. Don’t get dazzled by the latest technology.
A key word in the above point is “read” – robots
and spiders do not view graphics, they do not listen to
podcasts, and they don’t watch videos. They only
read text on the page and within the code. So you’d
better have great written content and appropriate tags
in addition to whatever graphics, audio, and video aspects
you may want to include on your web site.
3. Keyword research is imperative.
Because search engines look at words, you had better be
sure that you are using the right words on your web site.
That means filling your web site strategically with the
terms that your target market is most likely to use when
they are trying to find you. Don’t make assumptions
about what people will search on to find you – you’ll
miss out on a tremendous amount of traffic if you do. Do
the research, pack your web site with the relevant keywords,
and then let the search engines do their job.
